The Plantation Program implemented by Green Leaf Foundation, Gossaigaon was a comprehensive environmental conservation and community awareness initiative aimed at increasing green cover, restoring biodiversity, and promoting sustainable environmental practices across rural and semi-urban areas of Kokrajhar district, Assam. The project was undertaken with the objective of addressing growing environmental challenges such as deforestation, climate change, soil degradation, loss of indigenous tree species, and declining ecological balance in the region.
Under the programme, large-scale plantation drives were organized in schools, colleges, village roadsides, religious institutions, market areas, government offices, public spaces, and environmentally vulnerable locations across Gossaigaon Sub-Division and adjoining areas. The initiative focused on plantation of native, fruit-bearing, medicinal, and climate-resilient tree species suitable for the ecological conditions of Assam. Several rare and indigenous species including Jamun, Amlakhi, Leteku, Bael, Jamrul, Kordoi, Neem, Mango, Arjun, and other locally important species were promoted through the programme.
The project was implemented with active participation of local communities, students, teachers, youth volunteers, self-help groups, village committees, environmental activists, and partner institutions. Community engagement and awareness generation formed an important part of the programme to encourage long-term environmental responsibility and public ownership of plantation activities.
The Plantation Program also included awareness campaigns on climate change, biodiversity conservation, afforestation, sustainable development, and environmental protection. Awareness meetings, educational activities, and plantation drives were conducted on important occasions such as World Environment Day and Swachhata campaigns to strengthen public participation and environmental consciousness.
Special emphasis was given to monitoring and maintenance of planted saplings to ensure survival and long-term ecological impact. The initiative incorporated community stewardship approaches involving schools, local institutions, and village communities for protection and care of planted trees.
Through this programme, Green Leaf Foundation aimed to contribute towards cleaner surroundings, improved air quality, ecological restoration, climate resilience, soil conservation, and sustainable community development while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility among future generations.
